These days, most TV channels are having a field day organising daily debates on the government action against MQM during the 1992 operation and afterwards. Two different parties, PML-N and PPP were in government during the operation that continued from 1992 to 1997.In the daily talk shows, some of the main characters behind this operation are being asked very sensitive questions and they, without referring to the official records, base their answers on their memories of 1992 or 1997. These off-the-record-but-on-the-record answers are likely to be wrong or inaccurate to some degree. The anchorpersons somehow have managed to got hold of Brig (retired) Imtiaz, former DIB, who poses as Mr Know All on all channels. The Brigadier, it appears, had a finger in every pie in those days. One thing for sure is that our intelligence agencies, both civil and military, mostly rely on telling lies. Sometimes the information they provide to the government is entirely a pack of lies. I have spent over 30 years in uniform and base this opinion on my close observation of the intelligence people. All authentic documents about MQMs activities are available in the ISI and MI directorate at the GHQ and can be referred to instead of listening to the cock-and-bull story of Brigadier Imtiaz and those collaborating with him. -MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, August 29.
