Flood-hit family to get Rs20,000 before Eid

ISLAMABAD Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira Monday said that the Government had made all-out efforts to distribute Rs 20,000 as first tranche of financial assistance among the flood victims before Eid-ul-Fitr. He was addressing a press conference after the meeting of Council of Common Interests, which was chaired by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. He said it was decided in the meeting that distribution of assistance to the flood-affected people would be done in a transparent manner for the full satisfaction of the people. Giving details about the distribution of the first tranche of assistance among the flood victims, Kaira said that formula finalised by the CCI was distribution of Smart Cards among the victims based on the data of NADRA. The Minister said that calamity-hit farmers having less than 25 acres of land would be provided free of cost seeds and fertilizers before Rabi sowing season. The Federal and the Provincial Governments would have equal share in the first tranche to be distributed in the next few days, the Minister said, adding that a rough estimate of the amount to be distributed was Rs 40 billion. A 13-member team of NOMDC would watch over the process of fund distribution to ensure transparency. He said the PM strongly condemned the recent wave of terrorist activities. This war would continue till the elimination of the menace of terrorism, Kaira informed about the decision made in the CCI meeting. He also expressed his heart-felt condolences with the families of the victims of blasts in Lahore, Quetta, Mardan and other places. Kaira said that the PMs main focus was distribution in a transparent manner. It was decided that the forum of CCI would be used for policy level discussions. Kaira announced that NODMC comprising notables with good reputation was being constituted soon. He said that 13-member council would comprise three members from the Federation, two members each from all four provinces, while AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan would have one member each. The Council would be given responsibility of oversight on the ongoing relief and upcoming rehabilitation process. He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had already given its names for the supervisory council while the other provinces were likely to give their names in one or two days. The Minister said that Finance Ministry was in touch with the provinces to generate additional resources for rehabilitation of the flood victims. Additionally an awareness campaign through radio and TV would be launched at the same time, he added. He further said that the Federal and Provincial Governments were reducing their expenditures and diverting resources from PSDP and other sectors to provide relief to the flood-affected people. Information Ministry, Kaira said, will launch a special website to provide all details of funds received and spent on the flood victims. He said that there would be a system of tracking all the money.
