KARACHI - Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Coordination Committee Member Haider Abbas Rizvi said propaganda to tarnish the MQM image had failed.

Addressing a press conference along with Senator Baber Khan Ghouri and Nasreen Jalil at Khursheed Begum Secretariat, Azizabad, on Friday, he said MQM senator and former ports and shipping minister Baber Ghauri was not involved in the stealth of 19,000 containers from Karachi port.

He said the charge was totally false and baseless as the US Embassy had rejected the reports about these containers’ disappearance.

Haider said conspiracies and propaganda had been going on since MQM’s inception.

“The propaganda has been unleashed to discredit MQM. They are doing this to stop MQM from spreading across Pakistan,” he said.

He added that false stories were concocted to malign MQM; false cases registered against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, its leaders, elected representatives, office bearers and workers.

In the past, they accused MQM of hatching Jinnahpur conspiracy and presented fabricated maps to the nation. “But the people have seen that those who accused MQM of hatching Jinnahpur conspiracy admitted on media that it was a fabricated and false story.

He said: “A fabricated report was submitted to the Supreme Court a few days back about the presence of Muhajir Republican Army.

The court was also informed that 19,000 Nato containers containing arms and ammunition were stolen from the Karachi port.

It was also claimed that the stolen arms were being used in terrorist activities in the city and held MQM’s former minister for ports and shipping, Senator Babar Ghauri responsible for it.

However, the US Embassy in Pakistan termed the report baseless and fabricated.”

Haider stated that the US Embassy has vehemently denied the report of the stolen containers carrying arms and ammunition and said they never used Karachi port for the transportation of American or ISAF arms.

They accepted they used the port for diplomatic and military shipments. Neither the US nor ISAF has ever shipped weapons or ammunition via Karachi port, he claimed.

The statement from the US Embassy has clarified the matter. It is clear now that the report about the missing containers is fabricated and it has debunked the lies of anti-MQM elements, the MQM leader concluded.
