KARACHI - The City council in its meeting, chaired by Nasreen Jalil, on Tuesday protested the hike in flour prices to Rs5 per kg, while 20 per cent deduction in the utility fund of Jinnah Hospital by the federal government was also condemned. Initiated by treasury member Asif Siddiqi, a resolution against the current raise in the price of flour was unanimously passed which asked the government to take action against the culprits involved in the hoarding of wheat. In another resolution which was initiated by treasury members Dr Nighat Shakeel and Mirza Sajid Baig, the 20 per cent deduction in the fund for Jinnah Post Graduate Medical College by the federal government was condemned. They asked the government to not only take this decision back but also increase the funding. The resolution was passed unanimously. The treasury member Jalil informed the house that the government is buying wheat at the rate of Rs1,250 and selling it at the rate of Rs1,900 to flour mills, therefore, this disparity is conducive in the high price of flour. Another treasury member suggested initiating Sasti Roti scheme in Karachi as it is running successfully in Punjab. The treasury member Absarul Hassan moved two resolutions regarding the change of status of plots located in Gulistan-e-Johar and Federal B Area. One of the resolution was to change the status of plot ST-1, block-16, Scheme 36 of Gulistan-e-Johar from commercial (petrol pump) to commercial use (offices, shops, flats) under master plan, which was passed with majority. The other was to change the using status of plot number 2-A/3 St, block-9, scheme 16, Federal B Area under master plan memoir no 1 MPGO/CDGK/2009/16 with the addition of 'officiating nazim instead of 'by Mosufa, which was also passed with majority. The house debated on above mentioned resolutions when opposition leader Awam Dost Gorup Saeed Ghani suggested the house to decline such sort of resolutions and said this tradition of making private property commercial should not be appreciated by the City council. In the end, a resolution against the flogging of a girl in Swat was initiated by Asif Siddiqui, Nighat Shakeel, Arshad Qureshi in which the arrest of the culprits was sought and to ask media for playing its role in condemning such an act. The opposition created fuss on which the session was adjourned.
