The Hunger Games director Gary Ross has apparently told Lionsgate and Summit that he will not helm the sequel Catching Fire.

It was reported earlier this week that the writer-director would not return for Catching Fire unless he received a significant increase on his $3m salary, but an informer has now claimed that Ross is actually not concerned with a big money offer.

Ross apparently turned down Catching Fire to work on a project he’s personally written rather than repeat himself by taking on a sequel. A production source told The Playlist that Ross informed Hunger Games producers Summit and Lionsgate of his intention to exit the franchise earlier this week.

There is no information on possible replacements for Ross.

Simon Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, has already written a draft of the Catching Fire script.            –DS
