KHYBER AGENCY – As electioneering is in progress, a tough contest is expected among contenders of different political parties on two National Assembly seats - NA-45 and NA-46 in Khyber Agency. Khyber Agency has been split in two constituencies for National Assembly. NA-45 comprises tehsils Landi Kotal and Jamrud while NA-46 consists of the whole areas of tehsil Bara.

As the general elections are approaching, like elsewhere in the country election campaign has got momentum in NA-45. For the first time under extension of political parties act to Fata, almost all political parties have started their political activities and have fielded their candidates to contest the elections. A quite handful of figure independent candidates have also submitted their documents to compete for NA-45 constituency.

According to the Returning Officer Khyber Agency, as many as 28 candidates have filed their papers in the returning office. Some of the best candidates from political parties and independent candidates include twice winner of the constituency, Noor-ul-Haq Qadri, Zernoor Afridi of Jamaat-e-Islami(JI), Malik Darya Khan of Awami National Party (ANP), Hazrat Wali of Pakistan People Party(PPP), Said Kabir of Jamiat Ullema-e-Islam(F).

Although Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has not yet decided its candidate, yet Haji ShajiGul Afridi, Israr Afridi are competing as independent candidates. However, the real fight on the constituency is expected among Noor-ul-Haq, Shahjee Gul Afridi and Zernoor Afridi.

In 2002 and 2008 non-party election Noor-ul-Haq Qadri had won the seat with a visible margin. Zernoor Afridi had contested the last election as an independent candidate while Shahjee Gul Afridi who was the strong supporter of Noor-ul-Haq in the past elections, has deserted him this time and decided to try his own luck in the election 2013.

Allama Noor-ul-Haq supporters are confident enough to make hatrick of winning in the election. On the other hand Shahjee Gul Afridi, a big transporter, has attractive support of the transport and business communities. While Zernoor Afridi has further strengthened his position by serving the militancy-hit tribesmen for the last several years.

However it is stated that as much as candidates are in run, the brighter chances of winning the elections are of Noor-ul-Haq as the opponents’ votes will be split while 99 per cent supporters of Pir Qadri are apparently give vote to him as his followers.
