ISLAMABAD - Sub-Committee of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday was informed that the process of Afghans rehabilitation to their home country was in progress and in this connection a meeting with authorities in Kabul would be held next month.

The sub-committee met here under the chair of Shahida Akhtar Ali. Secretary Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) informed the committee that according to their statistics, the Afghan refugees are mainly concentrated in Peshawar, Nowshera and Dir and the process of their return is in progress. Responding to a query of a member, he said that the stay of all those Afghan nationals whose permits had expired was illegal and they could not stay in the country even if they have purchased properties here.

He further said that the ministry was planning to establish centres in Lahore and Islamabad to deal with all those persons whose permits to stay here had expired and they would be sent back after verification from the Afghan Embassy. The meeting also settled the grants of the SAFRON after finding them correct as per the ministry’s record. During the meeting, the audit official told the committee regarding the grant issued to the ministry for rehabilitation and to run the affairs of the ministry which was declared accurate.

A member of the committee Mian Abdul Manan was all praise to Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif for the award of punishment to retired Army Generals in NLC scam and said that it was probably for the first time in the country’s history that some senior army officers were awarded punishment for involvement in corruption.
