Scores of villagers belonging to tehsils Kabirwala, Pirmahal and Shorkot staged a protest and blocked the Shorkot Cantonment-Darkhana Road for hours over water-logging being caused by the Trimmu Sidhnai link canal as its water has destroyed their hundreds of crops and houses.

They were raising slogans demanding that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif should fulfil his promise to pave the banks of the canal to stop the seepage and water-logging.

Addressing the protesters, Pirmahal Farmers Action Committee president Chaudhry Shafqat Rasoool, Niamat Kamboh of Kabirwala and Chaudhry Afzaal of Shorkot opposed the approval of a project under which Nullahs will be constructed along the canal to end water-logging.

They demanded to withdraw the decision and to pave the canal banks with bricks to save their lands. They claimed that MPAs of three affected tehsels had met with the chief minister who had promised to pave the canal banks but to no avail. They said more than 100,000 acres of farmland had been waterlogged and millions of people had been made penniless as a result of non-cooperation from the government as their farmlands had been ruined due to severe waterlogging. Water is flowing into their lands and crops which had completely been destroyed while their hundreds of houses had fallen and a lot of remaining houses had developed cracks, they said.

Meanwhile, the rooms of Government High Schools of Chak 694/36 GB have been submerged with two feet water. They urged their elected representatives to raise the issue in the national and the provincial assemblies. They announced that they will not allow the implementation of so called development projects, and demanded implementation of Nespak’s feasibility report under which brick-lining had been suggested at a cost of Rs7 billion. They warned that if their demands were not accepted, the farmers will start committing suicides by jumping into the same canal.

Meanwhile, the City police registered a case against Saddr police Sub-Inspector Shabbir Ahmad and his accomplice Shahid Shami for custodial killing of a 23 years old youth of Chak 519 GB.

Complainant Arif Hussain, brother of diseased Mujahid Hussain, a a student of third year, said in the FIR that the accused SI had arrested his brother three weeks ago in a case of dispute of possession of a residential plot with his cousins.
