KHAIRPUR - The liver transplant team of Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has successfully performed a liver transplant surgery.

The operation was performed at liver transplant unit of GIMS, which is situated in Gambat, Khairpur Mir’s, an under developed area of rural Sindh.

The piece of liver was donated by Hameeda, wife of patient Bahram, 37, suffering from hepatitis B and D cirrhosis of liver. His liver had become so weak that it was hardly able to sustain life and there was definite threat to his life in near future. With a new liver now, he regains his life.

The condition of both the donor and recipient is stable and they are recovering fast. The donor will soon be discharged and her liver will regenerate in a couple of weeks. The recipient full recovery usually takes 3 to 4 weeks after which he will be a fully active functioning member of society.

This operation saved the life of a person who would have otherwise died because he could not afford to spend an operation which cost more than Rs5 million in private sector and even more abroad. However, at GIMS, this operation was performed free of cost.

The liver transplant surgery is one of the most sophisticated, technically demanding and highly expensive surgery, which is now available in an underdeveloped area of rural Sindh.

This gigantic task, which could have been labeled as miracle, is a bright chapter in the history of Pakistan because it was a joint venture of government of Sindh and dedicated local and foreign medical professionals lead by its director GIMS Dr Rahim Bux Bhatti.

Addressing the media conference, Dr Rahim Bhatti informed that the Liver Transplant Unit at GIMS is equipped with the most modern and state of the art facilities including operation theatres, ICUs, pre and post transplant wards, laboratory and blood bank services, CT scan, MRI, and an extensive network of ancillary services.

This could have only been possible due generous and continuous help of government of Sindh and the trust of public on the liver transplant team of GIMS.
