Life can't go on like this

A devastating tragedy occurred in the Parade Lane Mosque in Rawalpindi yesterday. Scores have died and dozens wounded. Hundreds of families have been plunged into grief. Despite such a great tragedy, there has been no moderating of the festivities around the country, especially in the government circles. If nothing else, at least three days of mourning should have been declared and all public dinners and functions banned. That way, we could have demonstrated some sense of participation in the grief of the stricken families. Being in a state of war, all future functions and events, even of political importance like the Foundation Day ceremonies of PPP or the forthcoming death anniversary of Benazir should be marked with restraint and with a sobering sense of dignified grief. -DR ZAHEER ASGHAR KHAN, Lahore, December 5.
