PK-661 crashed owing to engine problems: initial report

ISLAMABAD: The data of ill-fated plane of Pakistan International Airline (PIA), which crashed on December 7, in Havelian was released on Thursday.

Secretary Civil Aviation Authority, Irfan Elahi has revealed that the flight position at the time of crash was 33 nautical miles of Islamabad, the same position when the plane lost its communication with radar.

Talking to media he said, let it be known that the investigation team will analyze the data recorder after which it will be evident as to what was the causation of the plane crash.

The flight data revealed the plane began to face problems at 4:12pm when it was flying at a height of 14,000 feet. Within the space of the next three minutes, it came down to 7,000-6,950 feet. During this period, the pilot managed to control the plane for a very brief span of time.

At 4:15 pm, while at an altitude of 6,950 feet when it went out of control and began to nosedive and soon after disappeared from radar.

It has been reported that the pilot during his last conversation with the control room revealed about the engine problems in the plane.

Meanwhile, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman, Azam Saigol said, “Complete investigation would be carried out into the crash of the ATR aircraft.”

Speaking at a press conference, he said, “We will investigate how the plane met the accident.”

An investigation team lead by the Air Commodore Munir Butt has been formed to probe into the plane crash.

The Chairman PIA said, “There was no technical fault in the plane.” 

“ATR planes were considered safe for travel as thousands of French manufactured aircraft were operating around the world,” he added.

“The plane was manufactured in 2007 and was included in the PIA fleet the same year. At present the PIA has 11 ATR planes,” he added.

He said, “Every PIA plane was checked as per routine and on regular basis.”

“Air travel was still the safest mode of travel, however, faults could happen in any plane,” he added.

He said, “The contact of the plane with the radar was cut off suddenly.”
