KARACHI - Around 500 out of 700 candidates, who passed Entrance Test from Karachi University (KU), may be given admissions in the MS/PhD and MD programmes for 2009-10 at KU. The merit list of the successful candidates of the said programmes will be issued on February,16 2010. Karachi University has left NTS (National Testing Service) behind in term of organising the entrance test productively in the peaceful environment. KU Dean Faculty of Science and Convener to Admission Committee, Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi, expressed these views while talking to The Nation on Sunday. She said that around 2900 candidates appeared in the KU entrance test to get admissions in MS/PhD and MD programmes for 2009-10 in various departments, while out of them 700 could pass the test. Keeping in view of the available seats for the said programme at the KU, She said that it was more likely that around 500 candidates might be inducted in the programme. She said, We are following the rules of Higher Education Commission (HEC) set for MS/PhD programme. However, the KU entrance test was quite difficult as it had also included the GRE and English Communication materials. She claimed that KU had organised the test very successfully than the National Testing Service that conducted the same test last year. The test under the supervision of NTS remained under severe criticism due to mismanagement and technical flaws, she said and added that over all the pass percentage of previous test was more than 50, while this year the over all pass percentage is 31. Talking about the faculty-wise pass percentage, she said that in the faculty of science, the percentage of successful students is 35, the arts faculty has 31 percent, Business and Management Faculty has 19 percent and Pharmacy has 22 pass percentage in the current entrance test. As per the KU rules and regulations, mentioned on the KU official website, The final list of the qualified candidates will be made the basis of merit whereas the availability of seats by the departmental research committee (DRC) which will be submitted to the BASR for the consideration of provisional admission. All selected candidates will be required to complete eight courses (3+0 or 2+1) of 24 credit hours in two semesters. Candidates are required to attend 75 percent classes of each course. The students will have to pass the course work with CGPA 3.00 or more; in case of failure, the student will be allowed to improve the grade in further chance that has been decided only one. If the student fails to improve his/her grade even after the improvement chance, he/she will be given a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD). After passing the course work with CGPA 3.0 or more the student will apply through proper channel for confirmation of admission and approval of research title. The student will submit a synopsis along with research topic, bibliography, name of the Research Supervisor and a copy of the marks certificate issued by the Semester Examination Cell. Faculty members of KU/BASR approved supervisors holding MPhil/PhD degrees will be appointed as supervisors of MS/PhD candidates respectively.
