THATTA - A fire started by a falling oil lamp engulfed several huts in a fishing village in Thatta and killed 10 people including women and children early Sunday, police said.

The tragedy occurred on Bachoo island in the Thatta district.

"The fire broke out after an oil lamp in one of the huts fell to the ground. The fire later engulfed several huts, killing 10 people," a senior local police official, Fida Hussain, told AFP. He said nine people died on the spot and another on the way to the hospital.

Two children and four women were among the dead, while two injured children were transferred to the Civil Hospital in Karachi for treatment.

According to police, the intense blaze engulfed several huts land before it could be extinguished. About the cause of the fire, the police said the inmates had lit fire in the cold night; but unfortunately a canister of diesel close to it caught fire, which turned into an inferno.
