PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General Police Salahuddin Mehsud Wednesday revealed the main suspect involved in the murder of four-year-old Asma is a close relative of the victim family.

Presenting the suspect before media persons here at the central police office, Mehsud said, despite difficulties in the case, the police arrested two persons allegedly involved in the case. He added the matter was resolved in 25 days.

The main suspect, identified as Muhammad Nabi, is a close relative as well as a neighbour of the victim girl, he maintained. Muhammad Nabi, 15, has also confessed to his crime during the initial investigation, he added.

The IGP said apart from this, the police had also apprehended the other suspect, Abdul Qadir, a close friend of the main suspect as well as a relative of the victim girl. The KP police chief disclosed Nabi had told Abdul Qadir about the offence. He said the crime scene was a sugarcane field. Mehsud said it was a blind case as the police had no CCTV image or an eyewitness.

Giving further details about the incident, the police chief said Nabi, in his confessional statement, told the investigation team that he took the girl to a sugarcane field and tried to sexually assault her, but she started crying on which he strangulated her to death and fled.

He told the media persons that the case was resolved by tracing a drop of blood on a leaf in the sugarcane field where the minor had been killed. He said fingerprint traces of the suspect were found on the neck of the deceased.

Mardan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Muhammad Alam Shinwari said the main suspect was working at a hotel on daily wages, living near the house of the victim girl and was not on duty on the day of the crime.

The main suspect also accompanied the police in search operations.

It merits mentioning that the four-year-old girl went missing in the Gujjar Garhi area of Mardan and her body was found in sugarcane fields near her house on January 14 last.
