LAHORE - Security has further been beefed up across the province with the deployment of army troops and Pakistan Rangers along with 143,000 police personnel for maintaining law and order, peace and sectarian harmony. According to a handout, Inspector General of Police, Punjab, Shaukat Javed said the Punjab Police have been put on high alert for 9th and 10th of Muharram, and all RPOs, CCPO and DPOs have been alerted to strengthen security in sensitive areas, besides intensifying 24-hour armed patrolling in trouble spots. He said troops of Pakistan Army and contingents of Pakistan Rangers have been deployed in 20 districts of the province to assist the civil administrations. He said the Punjab Chief Minister has also directed all Commissioners, RPOs, DCOs, District Nazims and DPOs throughout the province to ensure that nothing is left to chance and to monitor and check all vehicles along the routes of all Ashura processions. They have also been directed to take strict action against miscreants irrespective of their leaning and predilection, he added. The IGP said that Chief Minister has accorded highest priority to maintaining sectarian harmony in the province. The provincial government has directed district administrations to resolve sectarian disputes amicably through dialogue between religious scholars from different schools of thought. City district governments have also been directed to remove irritants and provide security cover to license holding organisations, processionists and majalis premises, he added. Shaukat said utmost care would be taken to ensure peace and implement security plans during Ashura The concerned government officials should not hesitate to get in touch with him, in case any help was needed in problem areas. Meanwhile, special contingents of police and armed commandoes have been deployed in all sensitive areas and mobile teams have started round-the-clock patrolling under supervision of the concerned SSP and Sub Divisional police officers. In Lahore, CCPO Muhammad Pervaiz Rathore paid surprise visits to check the security arrangements at most sensitive spots and expressed satisfaction on the alertness of the force to thwart the nefarious designs of anti-state elements. Meanwhile RPO Sheikhpura Region DIG Tanvir Ahmad also visited Okara, Sheikhpura, Kasur and Nankana districts to review the deployment of police personnel and directed that all DPOs,SDPO and SHOs must be present at their places of duty otherwise strict action will be taken against negligent.
