MIRANSHAH - US predator drones early Tuesday morning targeted a house and a car in two separate strikes in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan killing at least five suspected militants, reported a private TV channel. The CIA-operated drones fired at least eight missiles at a house and a car in Haider Khel area of Mir Ali, some 25 kilometres east of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district, said a security official. At least four people were also injured in the attack. Locals were sifting through the rubble to recover the bodies of the dead and rescue the injured.Another security official, however, said US drones had fired four missiles at a militant compound killing four militants.A third official in Peshawar confirmed the attack and casualties. Both officials said the identity of those killed was not yet known. The covert US drone strikes are publicly criticised by the Pakistani government as a violation of sovereignty but American officials believe they are a vital weapon in the war against militants.Legal lobby group Reprieve estimates that up to nearly 900 civilians were among the 2,621 to 3,442 people killed by drones in Pakistan since 2004.Earlier, US drones had fired a volley of missiles at militant hideouts in tribal areas, killing at least 17 Taliban fighters near the Afghan border, security officials said. The strike had reportedly killed key Taliban warlord Mullah Nazir.
