KARACHI - The anti-polio campaign on Monday resumed in the metropolis amid strict security by the police and Rangers. The anti-polio was started in different areas of the City, including Liaquatabad, Gulberg, North Nazimabad and New Karachi Town.

Not a single incident was reported on the first day of the campaign. The district government rearranged the two-day postponed anti-polio campaign that will be ended on January 8 in various districts of the metropolis despite the fact that Taliban has already issued threats against the polio drive in Pakistan. The district government has already assured the polio workers for adequate security, following the threats given by extremists. It is pertinent to mention here that last month Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed had suspended the three-day anti-polio eradication campaign in the whole province due to the killing of vaccinators.

As many as five polio vaccinators, including four women in the metropolis were killed by extremists. Deputy Commissioner Central Saifur Rehman claimed that strict measures would be made for this polio campaign while strict action would be taken against those who would try to prevent this campaign.

UN agencies also suspended work on a nationwide campaign to inoculate children against the highly infectious disease after nine health workers were murdered in a string of attacks in the northwest and Karachi in December.
