SWAT - Reaffirming their stand on restoration of peace and stability in the region, the NWFP government and the Taliban from Swat headed by Maulana Fazlullah agreed to bring amendments in the 1999 NWFP Shariat Regulation Act with mutual understanding. "A joint committee will recommend proposals and suggestions for amendments in the NWFP Shariat Regulation Act", the NWFP Minster for Forest Wajid Ali Khan stated while briefing media persons about the six-hour long meeting held here on Monday in the office of Regional Coordination Officer (RCO) at Saidu Sharif, Swat. Dr Shamshir Ali Khan, Fazal Karim, DIG Malakand Tanveerul Haq Sipra, DCO Swat Shaukat Ali Yusufzai and DPO Wasiq Khan were on the meeting from the government side while the Taliban were represented by their spokesman Muslim Khan as well as Ali Bakhsh, Nisar Khan, Mehmud Khan and Mohammad Amin on the occasion. Wajid further said that the joint committee for recommending proposals and suggestions would include officials from Law Department as well as Swat Committee and people from Tehrik Shariat-i-Muhammadi. Both the government and the Taliban representatives discussed four points on the occasion including amendments in the Shariat Regulation Act, release of prisoners, withdrawal of check posts and compensation to the affected people. Muslim Khan, Taliban spokesman from Swat said that the peace would not return to the region until the agreement is not implemented in letter and in spirit and added that they were telling the NWFP government that they were undoubtedly sincere in this regard, but the central government was not sincere and was acting according to the American agenda. He said that the forces should be called back from the region and Sharia should be enforced in Malakand Division including district Swat and added that they were waiting for the government response in this regard and also said that the government should release the Taliban and do away with the cases lodged against them. He reiterated that the Taliban would honour the agreement so that the people of Swat could find peace in their area and their difficulties could be brought to an end. The NWFP Forest Minister said that Sharia would be enforced in Malakand Division within three months and added that all the promises made with the Taliban would be fulfilled completely. He further said that the Frontier Corps (FC) embarked on 17 trucks has already left the area while the Army would also gradually leave the locality and added that soon the held Taliban would be released and the cases against them would be withdrawn. He said that 40 persons have already been given money cheques as compensation and the remaining would also be paid soon and added that they expect cooperation from the Taliban side for bringing peace in the region. He said that the talks with Taliban were held in a congenial atmosphere and further meetings would also be held, adding that peace has been restored in Swat and all the difficulties in the region would end soon. Our Monitoring Desk adds: According to the BBC, provincial minister Wajid Khan further said that the government was committed to fulfil its promise of establishing Shariah in the area and the task would be completed in two months and all the stakeholders would be taken in confidence in this connection. Staff Reporter form Peshawar adds: A representative jirga of Afridi tribesmen will meet chief of Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) at Tirah today (Tuesday) to discuss various conditions put forward by both the government and the LI to settle down the crisis in the restive Khyber Agency. The 19-member Afridi tribes' jirga led by Alam Gul before leaving for Tirah discussed different government's points and also apprised the political administration of the conditions of the LI. In the meeting the political administration of Khyber Agency agreed to the request of the government to open Bara Bazaar, besides giving relaxation in the curfew imposed by the government on June 28 prior to the launch of operation in Bara area. On Monday, all the commercial markets and business centres remained open and people were witnessed purchasing commodities of daily use. The government relaxed the curfew from 8 am to 5 pm. After holding a detailed meeting with the LI chief Mangal Bagh, the jirga will leave for Peshawar, where its members would meet the Political Administration of Khyber Agency on Wednesday (tomorrow). The Political Agent Khyber Agency Akhtar Hayat Khan would represent the government side. PPI adds: The ongoing operation "Sirat-i-Mustaqeem" against the miscreants in Khyber Agency has entered the 10th day with Law Enforcement Agencies(LEAs) along with the political administration advancing as planned. According to a handout issued here by Media Cell, FATA Secretariat Peshawar, the 18 member tribal Jirga of Local Chiefs/Maliks was held on Sunday at Khyber House Peshawar. Meanwhile, the authorities have decided to relax curfew till 5pm in Tehsil Bara of Khyber Agency, and a tribal Jirga reached Tirrah Valley to hold talks with Lashkar-i-Islam leader Mangal Bagh, reported a private TV channel on Monday. Khyber Agency political agent Tariq Hayyat Khan has meanwhile said that a relaxation in curfew till 5pm was allowed in Tehsil Bara. He said that the tribal jirga has been asked to get assurance from different outfits about maintaining peace. An operation could be launched in the area if needed, he said. One the other side, an 18-member Jirga of Afridi tribe headed by Haji Umar Gul has reached Tirrah valley to hold talks with Lashkar-i-Islam leader Mangal Bagh. Our Staff Reporter from Peshawar adds: The local police have arrested 40 more proclaimed offenders and recovered 10 hand grenades, nine AK-47 and 12 other riffles, 45 pistols, 900 cartridges and 29 kilogram charas from their possession, police said Monday. APP adds: District Coordination Officer, City District Government Peshawar has under Section 144 CrPC prohibited the carrying of all sorts of arms and ammunition or any other article of offence or any explosive substance that is dangerous to public life and property in the limits of Peshawar district.
