Karachi former Nazim, Mustafa Kamal added three snorkels to the city fire department, after which, no more snorkels were added to the fire department. Karachi is one of the biggest cities of Pakistan and desperately needs a Rescue 1122 service. The Sindh government has been promising this service but we have not seen anything happen. Whenever a fire incident takes place, the Chief Minister and Governor always say that they will establish a new rescue service.

The ongoing fight between Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Cantonment Board, about which area falls under whose jurisdiction, has cost many lives. There is a need for clear jurisdiction as well as a responsible rescue team and latest equipment. Karachi should have one centralized rescue department which would work in every area. Each industrial zone should have a fire station.

I suggest making fire drills compulsory for all companies, as well as taking care that fire exits are provided before approving the building plan to avoid any further loss of innocent lives. The government should also give financial incentives and bonuses to firefighters for their good work.
