ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Wednesday sought detailed report from Capital Development Authority (CDA) in a petition seeking issuance of salaries to sanitary workers.
A single bench of IHC comprising Chief Justice of IHC Justice Athar Minallah issued these directions in a petition filed by a sanitary worker Ilyas Maseeh through his counsel Yasir Mahmood Chaudhary.
The IHC bench also directed the senior officer of sanitation department of CDA to appear before the court on the next hearing to answer the issues regarding the matter.  Justice Athar remarked that the workers who were responsible for cleanliness of the city were not being treated equally as citizens.
He added that the Constitution protected the basic rights of every citizen.  The IHC bench asked that who was the employer of these workers and what were the terms for their recruitment.
The CDA’s lawyer stated that these workers were attached with the job for last 15 to 20 years.  He further said that some of them were privatized while the services of many others were regularized.
Justice Athar said that the CDA had directed the contractors to ensure implementation of basic rights of the workers. He also said that the CDA was responsible if these workers were not being given their due rights.
Expressing its dissatisfaction over the response of CDA lawyer, the bench sought a detailed report from the civic body till July 29 for further proceedings in this matter.
