Political hiccups mar much vital project

FAISALABAD - The Punjab government seems still reluctant to start the much-delayed and important project of the construction of GC University Faisalabad new campus on Canal Road due to which hundreds of students belonging to Faisalabad division and adjoining district including Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, and have been face various problems. Its shocking for the citizens that despite repeated demands by educational circles and declaring Canal Road campus as most suitable for GC University in a meeting held with Punjab Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan. According to sources, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif is not will to start the construction of the GCU new campus to please some members the provincial assembly. GC Faisalabad was awarded the status of university by former Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool during the rule of Musharraf following vehement of demands of the citizens of the countrys third largest city who have been confronted many problems due to absence of any general university. However, after the GC was awarded university status the problems of shortage of spaces cropped up for which some 6400 kanal of land was allocated to build new campus of the varsity on Canal Road. But since that day, some political circles started creating hurdles in the way of construction of new campus. The Nation some months earlier had published a story with the sketch of a letter written by PML-N MPA Rana Afzal to shift the varsity project near Sadhar Bypass. The source said Rana Afzal wants to upgrade the land value of his personal property that was the reason he was insisting to shift the project there. The source maintained that despite the Nespak engineers clear report that GC University should be constructed on Canal Road and all the examination reports were cleared in this regard, the Punjab CM was not ready to start its construction just to please his own cabinet member. It is difficult to understand as on one hand the Nespak has pencilled all the maps and designs for the GC University new campus on the proposed site and on the HEC devolution to provinces has been propose, why the Punjab government has been dragging its feet over undertaking the project. Faisalabad has been stronghold of the PML-N in every general elections but the wrong policy of the Punjab government to hamper the execution of various development projects in the city including GC University new campus project, the citizens are questioning as to why they are being sentenced for their loyalty towards the PML-N. They are of the view that if some elements in the rank and file of the Punjab government have wishful thinking the time is not far when that will prove wrong. Due to the delay in the initiation of the construction of GC new campus on Canal Road hundreds of students are facing many problems as they have to move to other cities for higher studies. Citizens, political, social, educational and religious circles have demanded the Punjab CM to take notice of the situation and start the project on priority basis as further delay in its execution will hurt the PML-N image among the people.
