KARACHI - Two people were burnt to death while four others severely injured when a huge fire erupted in paper market, located opposite to Lighthouse Cinema, MA Jinnah Road, within the jurisdiction of Methadar police station here on Saturday. As per details, fire engulfed the two floors of Haji Building leaving two dead while four others were critically injured. The hospital Medico Legal Officer (MLO) had also confirmed the two deaths. The fire rapidly spread, resultantly six motorcycles parked outside the building and eight shops were burnt. Meanwhile, Abdul Wahid, spokesman of fire department, said that the fire vehicles were rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the information. The cause of the incident could not be ascertained. He said that soon after the incident, people along with the volunteers belonging to different non-government organisations reached the spot to extinguish the fire, while the ambulances also reached to the scene. According to the police, the deceased were a shopkeeper and a customer. The fire was erupted in a shop which was located on the ground floor. It later rapidly spread to the first and the second floor. The volunteers, however, managed to rescue other three persons including two children along with their mother, trapped in the building. The bodies were shifted to Burn Ward of the Civil Hospital, where one victim of the incident was identified as 25-year-old Rizwan, whereas the other was identified as Ejaz, a resident of Ranchore Lane, who came there to purchase some stuff for the occasion of Rabiul Awwal. Ejaz was said to be the father of three children. The fire also created fear and panic among the shopkeepers and the residents of the area as well. Commercial activities were suspended as the rescuers recovered the two dead persons from the shop. The police said that at least 13 firefighters participated in the rescue work and controlled the blaze after the struggle of three hours. The spokesman said that the rescuers faced many difficulties during the rescue work due to narrow lanes of the highly congested area and a score of onlookers that gathered on the scene and created problems for the rescuers.
