ISLAMABAD - After Election Commission’s refusal of allotting ‘closed book’ to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) as election symbol, the JUI-F on Thursday filed a petition in Islamabad High Court (IHC) against ECP’s verdict.

Following public’s complaints against JUI-F chief and his candidates, recently ECP has swapped the book with open one with some alphabets and digits. ECP official says that they received complaints that during the last elections people were given impression that the symbol was a gateway to heaven. On Thursday, JUI-F filed a petition in IHC, seeking directions for allotment of closed book as an election symbol.

In his petition, JUI-F Senior leader, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, contended that JUI-F had been contesting elections since 1996 with book as election symbol, but now ECP changed his party’s election symbol.  In the petition, JUI-F leader requested the court to direct ECP for allotting his party as closed book as JUI-F supporters have affiliation with this symbol. The writ branch of IHC received the petition.

The petition is yet to be fixed for hearing.
