SHEIKHUPURA - A PPP leader and former lawmaker has said that Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo as the party’s Punjab president had caused a considerable damage to the party, terming the damage more than that caused by dictators like Ziaul Haq and Pervaiz Musharraf.

Former forest minister Rai Ijaz Ahmad said that undoubtedly Wattoo was a good politician but he was neither an old worker nor so much loyal and sincerer to the party. Therefore, he could not properly manage the party system in Punjab, said Rai. He said that President Zardari had assigned him a job to promote the party in Punjab while Wattoo remained absolutely failed to produce hopeful results in this respect. In the last by-elections, the PPP suffered defeats due to Mr Wattoo as the latter could not carried out election campaign in a befitting manner, said Rai.

He said that in his meeting with President Zardari in Bahawalpur, he brought into the president’s notice the entire situation about Wattoo’s role in the Punjab. He claimed that the president had agreed to convene a high-level meeting to discuss the issue. Rai told the media that he himself would contest from NA 135 and PP-171 constituencies in the upcoming general elections on the PPP tickets. He added that his son Azeem Saeed would be the PPP’s candidate for NA-134 seat. He further said that the PPP had made a lot of sacrifices to protect democracy in the country.
