Over 3,000 held in drug cases in one year in Peshawar

Peshawar   -  Capital City Police have arrested 3707 accused in cases of drugs during the year 2020, a senior officer said on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists, SSP Operations Yasir Afridi said that compared to the year 2019, the police conducted more operations and seized more drugs during the year 2020. He said a total of 2871 cases were lodged in drug trafficking and dealing.

Explaining the figures, he said 73kg crystal meth (ice), 4350kg charas, 362kg heroin, 707kg opium, and more than 4000 bottles of wine.

“Besides various trade hubs, we are also focusing on educational institutions and their surroundings, with an aim to stop the spread of drugs and bring the traffickers to justice,” Yasir Afridi added.

He said students were more at risk of ice drug that was why the police had also launched a campaign educational institutions to raise awareness among students about the ill effects of the drug.

He said that the police recently busted a gang that used to bring ice from a neighbouring country and then supply it locally and internationally.

“A walk, organised by the police, traders and other segments of society a few days ago in the city, was part of our campaign against the drugs,” the official said.
