LAHORE - The Establishment Division on receiving the instructions of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani notified on Wednesday the removal of Managing Director Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) Munawar Baseer, asking Member Power Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Fazal Ahmed Khan to take over as the new MD. In another notification, Chief Executive Officer, Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) Air Marshal (Retd) Shahid Hamid has been removed by giving the additional charge to Additional Secretary Yousaf Memon. The Ministry of Water and Power sources were of the view that the MD PEPCO was made a scape-goat in the present electricity crisis as he was blunt in his comments on the issue and was also demanding outstanding dues. The sources were of the view that the present electricity crisis might be entering into further worst situation as the new MD would need time to understand the sensitive state of affairs within the company following the overdue payments. The sources further said that the April 28th meeting between the Minister and the out going Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) chief at Islamabad could not reach any conclusion as to how to provide any bailout package to PEPCO in a circumstances where the govt had also been facing a severe financial crunch. Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also took on board the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani who convened a meeting at Prime Minister's secretariat the very next day where the Ministry of Finance briefed about the situation, they added. Sources said that the MD PEPCO was declared an 'irritated person' when he advocated that DISCOs had submitted for 7 per cent increase in electricity tariff.
