KARACHI - Six persons were killed while ten others injured in gun battle between rival gangsters in mafia-infested Lyari Town on Wednesday afternoon after which police launched a massive operation against gangsters under the leadership of SP Lyari Imran Shaukat, police said. An official of Baghdadi police station said rival Rehman Dacoit and Ghaffar Jigri groups had clashed in Sangho Lane area at about 11am in the morning. The areas including Mohalla Eidu Lane, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, Tenari Road, Kamaila Stop and Agra Taj remained in the grip of heavy exchange of fire between the police and Zikri group.  As per reports, two commanders of Zikri gang, Rashid alias Raikha and Akhtar, along with four other accomplices including Rehan, Ali Muhammad and Pathan have been killed during the encounter. MLO Civil Hospital, Dr. Mubarak Ali, confirmed the dead bodies of Riaz alias Rehan alias Dada alias Chota Baba, an unidentified criminal and Mohammad Ali have been identified and said that nine other injured people were also rushed to the hospital. Witnesses said that police have erected barricades outside Eidu Lane, Bukhari Road, Tenari Road of Gull Muhammad Lane, however gangsters of Dacoit group managed to enter the areas to fight the rival group.   The gangsters were putting stiff resistance as they shot at police and also lobbed hand-grenade, the police official said. The firing continued in the evening and large number of policemen cordoned off the area, he added. Later, the law-enforcement agencies halted the action for a while. A high-level meeting of police authorities to chalk out future line of action was held in Baghdadi police station. TPO Lyari Imran Shaukat told the newsmen that operation was halted under a strategy for a limited time and would be resumed tomorrow. He further said the contingent was called back, as those parts declared as 'no-go areas' were abolished and writ of the law established. "The operation will be resumed tomorrow and lady policewomen will also be included in the squad to handle women. The peace in Lyari will be restored in a month", the official vowed. TPO refuted the reports that the operation was suspended following immense pressure from certain quarters. Later, in the evening DIG South Iqbal Mehmood visited the violence-hit areas of the Lyari Town.
