Closed, good riddance

The news item in The Nation of 23rd April about flagrant violations of rules by NAB in the appointment of its senior personnel was extremely disturbing. It gave a case by case account with names about how favourites, with clear inadequacies in qualifications, were recruited in grades 17, 18 and 19. Not only that but these people were, then, promoted in a short period of three months to the next grade, again in clear violations of rules. The report also disclosed how NAB was used selectively to catch only those suspected of having an anti-government bias. Now that NAB is being winded up, its whole history should be thoroughly scrutinized by a parliamentary committee and the NAB high-ups who were guilty of these misdeeds be brought to book. -DR ZAHEER ASGHAR KHAN, Lahore, via e-mail, April 24.
