ISLAMABAD - Though the by-election for provincial assembly seat, PP-206, Multan, was of little significance, the stepping in of Syed Ahmed Mujtaba Gilani, brother of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, in the political arena has brought it under the spotlight. The Punjab Assembly seat PP-206 fell vacant after the disqualification of Ms Naghma Mushtaq who was elected on the PML(N) ticket. This time Pakistan Peoples Party has awarded party ticket to the brother of the Prime Minister and he is running his election campaign in the area with much ease, as almost all the bigwigs of the area are standing on his side. The constituency comprising tehsil Jalalpur of Multan always remained the stronghold of Pakistan Peoples Party and PM Gilani has done a lot of development work in the area, despite the fact that last time their candidate from the area had lost the election. The political analysts are terming it a one-sided affair, as Prime Minister Gilani had undertaken a number of development works to appease the voters of this constituency despite the fact that they had not granted vote to their candidate in the last elections. Although Pakistan Peoples Party had lost the provincial assembly seat from this area yet the National Assembly seat was won by Dewan Ashiq of PPP, who along with other PPP stalwarts is now running the campaign of Syed Ahmed Mujtaba Gilani. Syed Ahmed Mutjaba Gilani, while talking to TheNation, denied the charges that Government machinery was being used in the election and said that they had rendered great services to the people of this area and were enjoying respect and support of the masses. He said that all those PPP MPAs and other leaders who were coming to his election campaign were not using any government protocol as they were not having much influence in the Punjab Government. He further said that in year 2002, his nephew had won election from this constituency but they lost this seat in the last general elections, as PPP could not find strong candidate. He said that he had great respect for the people of this constituency and that was the reason that PPP government had initiated development projects worth millions of rupees much before the disqualification of PML (N) MPA from the area whose degree was found fake.
