A social evil

Despite recent bans on serving sheesha at public places, the evil practice continues in the city where the youth can easily get access to sheesha. The law is abused for a few rupees. It is an irony that we are unable to implement effective strategies to curb the menace of tobacco and sheesha consumption. Being a student of Karachi University, I witness students smoking at every corner of the campus. The apparent ban on selling and keeping cigarettes is not effective as canteens keep cigarettes in remote corners. Although the dangers of smoking cigarette and sheesha are common knowledge, the trend continues. Mere bans are not enough. A much more effective strategy that involves the youth, manufacturers, health workers and the media is needed to counter the problem.
