According to the Nation’s editorial, the World Bank, in its progress report on Pakistan, has said the annual loss to Pakistan resulting from loadshedding is Rs 400 billion a year, which it cannot sustain. The solution proposed by the World Bank report is instructive: hydel projects. Not only would they produce cheaper electricity, but would also avoid the burden of importing oil. This is in keeping with World Bank’s recent recommendation that Pakistan pursue the Kalabagh dam project. No hydel project is a substitute for another, Pakistan needs them all. Now even the World Bank has reached the inevitable conclusion that Kalabagh dam must be built. The government must stop making anti-dam statements.
