Aitzaz 'rejects' AG slot

ISLAMABAD - At a time when National Reconciliation Ordinance is being debated in the country, former President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan has refused to fight legal battle for NROs beneficiaries in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, TheNation has learnt reliably on Saturday. Legal minds close to PPP senior leader Aitzaz Ahsan confided to TheNation that the government was vigorously willing to take up the services of Aitzaz as a shield between the Presidency and the supreme judiciary. Aitzaz was offered the slot of attorney general of Pakistan to play a key role in this regard but he categorically refused, they explained. Aitzaz said he would keep up his professional activities with full zeal and zest but would not accept any government slot, they said. The apex court may take up the matter of said ordinance after 28th November as well as summon all the stakeholders under the Article 248 of the Constitution, they added. A top lawyer like Aitzaz was pressing need of the government to remove stigma of notorious NRO through a legal battle if needed, they justified. They were of the view that the government machinery was in hot water, as the treasury benches withdrew NRO tabled in National Assembly amid hue and cry. President Zardari unwillingly invited Aitzaz, who was unhappy with PPP leadership since commencement of lawyers movement, to discuss the current political turmoil and his legal position with regard to NRO, they further informed. The President wanted to place Aitzaz as attorney general, as former attorney general Latif Khosa had failed to defend governments stance in Supreme Court, they remarked. When this correspondent contacted Aitzaz Ahsan, he neither confirmed nor denied accepting of any slot in the treasury camp. My meeting was totally personal. I will not share a single word with someone due to some reasons, the eminent laywer said. When asked whether he was offered any slot during the meeting, Aitzaz, who was on his way to Lahore from Karachi, said that he would not go to any private talk further as he was reading various reports in media. Earlier, Aitzaz had told this scribe on Thursday last that the government had acknowledged the supremacy of justice by deciding not to bring NRO in the Parliament. Many VVIPs would face trial, he said and added that the Supreme Court couldnt summon the President under the Article 248 of the Constitution even if the apex court nullified the infamous NRO.
