LAHORE - The Punjab Government is setting up an autonomous Health Commission to provide better healthcare facilities to the citizens as well as to bring about an overall improvement in this sector, said Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif while presiding over a high level meeting at the CM's Secretariat here Saturday. The chief minister told the meeting that autonomous Healthcare Commission would go a long way in the uplift of health sector as well as provision of modern treatment facilities to the masses. He said the establishment of the Commission would surely improve performance of hospitals both in the public and the private sectors. He said provision of better healthcare services was the top priority of the government which was taking revolutionary measures to ensure the best healthcare facilities to the common man, in addition to providing free of cost medicines to them. He said rural and basic health centres were also being upgraded to cater to the health needs in a better way. The meeting also finalised a number of recommendations. Provincial Minister for Law Rana Sanaullah Khan, Secretary Health and senior officers concerned were present on the occasion. Shahbaz said Healthcare Commission was aimed at ensuring quality healthcare facilities to the people and recommendations in this regards had been finalised in the light of the best international models. He said setting up of the commission will yield positive results, adding that the government was doing its best by using all-out resources for the development of health sector. Billions of rupees have been allocated for this purpose during the current fiscal year, he added. Shahbaz said for the first time in the history of the country, generators and air-conditioners have been installed in hospitals whereas measures are also being taken to ensure attendance of doctors in far-flung areas. But, he said, efforts of the government would yield the desired results only if those associated with this sector performed their responsibilities regarding service of the ailing humanity with commitmet. The meeting also considered various aspects regarding Healthcare Commission and finalised recommendations in this regard. CM for effective strategy to provide sugar at fixed rate Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has directed authorities concerned to ensure provision of sugar to the masses at the fixed rate and sugar bags of one and two kg each should be brought into the market immediately for the convenience of consumers. He said that administration should hold meetings with Sugar Mills Association and evolve a practicable formula for the supply of sugar in the market so that it could be easily available to the people. He was presiding over a high-level meeting, here on Saturday to ensure supply of sugar at the fixed rate. He said that an effective strategy should be adopted for the supply of sugar to the common man at the fixed rate and a meeting be arranged with sugar mill owners in this regard. He said that sugar millowners should also cooperate with the government for supply of sugar to the people. He said that he wants easy availability of sugar to the people at the fixed rate in all markets and administration will have to discharge its responsibilities in this regard. He issued instructions for stern action against the elements involved in the hoarding of sugar and said that special teams be constituted for this purpose. He ordered formation of a committee headed by ACS for negotiations with millowners.
