NAB GB arrests four forest officials

GILGIT - The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday arrested four forest officials for their alleged involvement in corruption and corrupt practices.

According to a NAB official, the nabbed officials were accused of transporting illegally cut timber to other parts of the country in 2013, caused over Rs225 million losses to the national exchequer.

A local accountability court has handover the arrested officials to the NAB for a 14-day physical remand. Retired and in service, forest officials are included among the arrestees.

According to their details, Zamarud Khan, a retired Gilgit conservator, Qadar Dan, a retired Diamer forest officer, Saleem Khan, divisional forest officer Astore, and Faridullah superintendent forest department Gilgit-Baltistan are among the arrested officials.

They were booked in three different cases of transporting illegally cut timber during the timber policy 2013 and in this regard interrogations were underway.

It is expected that more officials and transporters may be arrested on the bases of interrogation.
