FAISALABAD - PTI’s candidate Sheikh Khurrum Shahzad has won by-elections for provincial assembly constituency PP-72, according to unofficial results.

By-elections were held for PP-72 on Monday as PML-N MPA Khawaja Muhammad Islam was disqualified in a fake degree case.

The PTI’s candidate took 23,972 votes and won the by-elections while PML-N candidate Khawaja Liaquat, the brother of ex-MPA Khawaja Islam, took 18,256 votes. PPP candidate and city president Rana Mushtaq stood third. Some 13 candidates participated in the elections.

It merits mentioning here that PP-72 is the first constituency won by PTI in Faisalabad out of the 11 national and 22 provincial assembly seats in Faisalabad city district, and this is also the first constituency lost by PML-N in Faisalabad as all other national and provincial assembly seats are with the PML-N.

The PTI said that the historical defeat of PML-N in PP-72 by-elections is a clear verdict of the masses against the policies of the N government.  Assistant presiding officer Muhammad Rafique was caught red-handed at a polling station No-104 casting fake votes. Police took the accused officer in custody.
