LAHORE - Election frenzy which has engulfed the National Assembly constituency of NA-122 for the last over a week, kept the political parties in the field on yesterday as well.
While the PPP remained busy making preparations for its Thursday rally, the PML-N and the PTI candidates continued with their usual schedule of holding corner meetings and enticing smaller groups into supporting their candidates.
The PTI came up with the claim that it has secured the support of over a dozen religious groups and individuals in the constituency. Party’s Punjab organiser Chaudhary Mohammad Sarwar Wednesday said that National Mashaikh Council, Sunni Ulema Council, Jamaat Ahl-e-Sunnah and 30 ulema had announced their support for his party’s candidates and also agreed to fully participate in the public meetings and rallies. Those who met Ch Sawar included National Mashaikh Council chief Khwaja Ghulam Qutubuddin Afridi, Sunni Ulema Council’s Allama Muhammad Jamil Sajid, Rajeehullah Hazarvi, Allama Sarfraz Saifi, Allama Sajid Mehmood Chishti, Allama Qazi Abul Ghaffar Qadri, Allama Muhammad Hafiz Athar, Allama Ahmad Buksh Sialvi, Mufti Asif Ali Naumani, Mufti Liaqat Ali Siddiqui, Allama Ghulam Murtaza Saidi, Peer Muhammad Amin Sajid, Sahibzada Mukhtar Ahmad Qadri and others.
The PML-N yesterday enticed Railways’ employees into voting for its candidates.
Railways’ Minister Kh Saad Rafique addressed a public gathering at Engine Shed where 12 Railways unions announced their support for the PML:-N candidates. Rikshaw union also announced support for the ruling party.
Small corner meetings addressed by PML-N leaders were also hallmark of Wednesday’s campaign. Saad Rafique, Talallal Ch, Abid Sher Ali and Hanif Abbasi attended a public gathering at Icharra in the evening while Ayaz Sadiq addressed a meeting at UC-84.
The PML-N candidates inaugurated new election office at BB Pakdaman on Wednesday. Corner meetings by local party leaders were also organised in different union councils.
Shoaib Siddiqui of PTI addressed a rally at Garhi Khuda Baksh. He was accompanied by Ajasam Sharif who recently defected to the PTI from PML-N. Ummer Cheema and Jamshaid Iqbal also accompanied him.
PPP’s central Punjab president Mian Manzoor Wattoo chaired a meeting of Punjab executive committee which was attended by its Lahore office-bearers and party candidate Barrister Amir Hassan. The meeting reviewed arrangements for PPP’s election rally to be held at Ghari Shahu on Thursday (today).
The meeting deplored the massive use of the government resources by the ruling party candidates and reckless expenditures of appalling proportion by the PTI candidates.
Wattoo told the meeting that Opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah, Aitzaz Ehsan, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Sherry Rehman would be the main speakers.
He further told the participants that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto telephoned him yesterday and expressed his appreciation for the PPP Punjab for enthusiastically carrying out election campaign in NA-122 despite all odds.
Wattoo quoted Bilawal as having said that PPP had fielded highly educated men of impeccable integrity who fully understand the problems of the poor masses and had a road map to address their miseries.
