LAHORE: More than 1,000 electricity workers yesterday staged protest in front of Lesco head office against proposed privatisation of power sector.

Earlier, a rally was organised from Wapda House to Lesco head office on Queen’s Road. The protest has been organised by Wapda Hydro Electric Union.

Holding placards and banners with anti government slogans, protesting workers vowed to resist privatisation of power distribution companies. The Union leaders claim that PML-N is selling profitable companies like Lesco and Fesco to their own front men.

They also claimed that the government was following directives of international financial institutions like IMF and World Bank which were not in Pakistan’s interest.

"The govt can't privatise public utilities as Founder of Pakistan Quaid Azam had said that we should not lose or give away our assets," Khursheed Ahmed, Secretary General of the Union said.

There are reports that the Wapda workers have staged protest demonstrations in other cities of Pakistan against the govt proposed move. It is expected that the workers protests will get further gain momentum coming days. "We will not let the government sell the assets of Pakistan," chanted the highly charged workers.–Staff Reporter
