VEHARI-The attack on district in-charge anti-polio vaccination and her professor husband was the result of personal old enmity and has nothing to do with the vaccination or polio elimination campaign whatsoever.

District Police Officer Omer Saeed Malik declared while talking to The Nation here on Friday. The police chief informed that reports about the attack by the elements opposed to anti-polio vaccination are mere rumours and the public should not heed them. “District anti-polio vaccination in-charge Azra Altaf and her husband Muhammad Altaf, professor at Govt degree college have nominated the attackers and have termed the incident result of old enmity,” he informed, adding that the media and the masses must discourage such rumours and avoid any unrest in the district.

It is to be recalled that Prof Muhammad Altaf was on the way back home along with his wife Azra Altaf, In-charge district anti-polio vaccination, in a car the other night. In the remit of Luddon Police, two accused later identified as Yasir and Abdul Rasheed fired gunshots on the car, leaving the couple with critical bullet wounds.

According to sources, Azra Altaf was scheduled to visit Paris for attending a seminar on polio eradication scheduled to be held on October 16. On the other hand, Prof Altaf and Azra Altaf confirmed the police statement, saying that linking the incident with anti-polio expedition is wrong. “The incident is result of purely family dispute and has nothing to do with anti-polio campaign whatsoever,” they injured coupled declared. The police have arrested one accused and the other will also be behind the bar soon, informed a police spokesman.
