FBR barred from recovering welfare fund

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court yesterday stayed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) from recovering workers welfare fund from industrial units in Punjab.

A rice mill challenged the recovery of the fund. During the course of arguments, Advocate Mohsin Virk stated that the high court had annulled amended sections of workers welfare fund ordinance four years ago. However, he said the FBR, taking advantage of an SHC order, has been continuing recovering of the same though the provisions of relevant Ordinance governing the recovery have been annulled.

The counsel contended the SHC decision was not applicable to the mills in Punjab. He prayed the court for restraining the FBR from recovering the fund. Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza through an interim order stayed the recovery and sought detailed reply from the FBR within two weeks.–Staff Reporter
