Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan on Friday claimed that no internal or external agency was involved in the breach of security at the Prime Minister Office (PMO) fol
lowing a set of audio leaks featuring conversations of former and incumbent prime ministers surfaced on social media. The minister made these remarks while speaking at a press conference here after chairing the first meeting of a high-powered committee formed to probe the audio leaks and to review cyber security protocols at the PM Office.
“I am categorically saying that no hostile or internal agency is involved in this security breach,” he said.
He also said that an investigation into the security breach at the PMO had reached its conclusion. The probe indicated some “individuals” who could be involved in hacking and leaking of private conversations at the PMO, he added. The minister said that it had yet to be decided whether the report of inquiry would be made public or not. He further said that a comprehensive report was being presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the recommendations in the report will be implemented after the premier issued any directions.
The minister said it had been decided that cyber security protocols should be defined at a high level and the required equipment to ensure security should be bought. He noted that people were often involved in such activities for money as technology had advanced so much that hacking a telephone call was no longer a difficult task. Referring to the latest audio leak featuring PTI chief Imran Khan, Rana Sanaullah said that his narrative of international conspiracy has already been exposed before the nation. Now Khan’s involvement in horse-trading has also come to the limelight, he added. “This ‘fitna’ now stands exposed,” he remarked. The interior minister accused the former prime minister of playing games with the nation with a false narrative and misleading the youth of this country only to return to power.
