With the signing of the Charter of Democracy, there was hope at last for principled politics. However this was not to be. Ms Bhutto went against the CoD. She strucked a secret deal with former President to work with him afterwards. After Benazir's death and elections of February 18, PML-N kept the hopes of democracy alive by offering to support PPP at the centre, ministries or no ministries. And Mr Zardari is now asking PML-N to rejoin the coalition by making PPP's support in Punjab conditional. Meanwhile, Salman Taseer and Manzoor Wattoo are going full speed ahead on horse-trading, another thing which the CoD had disallowed. It appears we are back in the '90s. I would request Nawaz Sharif to adhere strictly to the CoD and show the people there is at least one party that believes in principled politics. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, September 2.
