SRINAGAR (AFP) - At least 26 people were killed and 19 others injured in Indian Kashmir Monday when an overcrowded bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge, police said. The accident occurred in northern Doda district, south of the summer capital Srinagar, on the main highway linking the Himalayan region with the rest of India. Twenty people died instantly, while six others died in a hospital, a police spokesman said, adding three more people were in critical condition. Bus accidents are common in the area because of a combination of bad roads, congestion and poor maintenance of vehicles. In June, 26 people were killed in a similar accident in the same area.
