LAHORE - Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer has said the Pakistani nation is second to none and Pakistani professionals have proved their mettle throughout the world, and if Pakistani students dedicate themselves to their studies, Pakistan can soon join the ranks of the developed countries. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of extension project of Bairy Block of Aitchison College, here on Monday. This project will result in addition of 30 rooms to the high school and will be completed in a year at a cost of Rs 120 million. The Governor said only increase in national production was not enough to join the rank of the developed nations, as increase in the number of enlightened people was very important. He stressed upon the students that after achieving success in life, they should also take care of those people, who were less fortunate and did not have those facilities and opportunities, which were available to them. The Governor appreciated the educational standard of Aitchison College and said that the number of seats should be increased in the institutions while maintaining the quality of education. The students, who have been selected under the Governor Scholarships Scheme, are not well off financially, but they are far ahead in talent and commitment to their education, he added. Salmaan Taseer said there was a need for tolerance and promotion of liberal thinking, while keeping in view the philosophy of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal. Pakistan is not an ordinary country as it is the only Islamic country which is a nuclear power. Pakistani professionals have proved their worth throughout the world. More than 100 Pakistani software engineers are working in Silicon Valley of America while the ratio of Pakistani engineers in NASA is five percent which is an honour for the country, he said. Later, the Governor gave away Governor Scholarships to five deserving but talented students, who have got admission in Aitchison College on merit through various non-governmental organisations.
