ISLAMABAD - In the wake of fast changes taking place on the political horizon of the country, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has called the meeting of parliamentary parties’ heads of all the opposition parties today (Thursday) to discuss the issues like Panama Leaks standoff and rejection of references against the Prime Minister by Speaker National Assembly.

Talking to media here yesterday, Syed Khursheed Shah said that Speaker National Assembly had rejected the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf references seeking disqualification of the Prime Minister but he had not given the reasons on the basis of which he had discarded these references.

He said that in the past such controversial rulings by the speakers had been challenged in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and as the reference filed by PTI were turned down so that final word in this connection would be of PTI leadership.

He said that the opposition parties would discuss and deliberate upon the recent developments in the national politics, including the future course of action of the opposition parties on contentious issues including the standoff on Panama Leaks.

To a question, he said that when former speaker National Assembly Dr Fahmida Mirza had rejected the reference against the then prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani she had listed the reasons for rejecting the reference, adding Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq should have given reasons for the rejection of PTI and other political parties’ references against the Prime Minister.

Some insiders in the Pakistan People’s Party informed The Nation that the PPP leadership was not happy over the way PTI Chairman Imran Khan was taking unilateral decisions and then after making public his protest plan approach opposition parties for support.

These sources said that the announcement of staging protest in front of Riwind residences of Prime Minister and his family by Imran Khan in his Karachi rally did not go well with PPP leadership which would not be joining him in the protest.

Sources said that Syed Khursheed Shah had conveyed his party’s concerns to PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the decision of calling the meeting of opposition parties’ parliamentary leaders was also decided to remove the misunderstandings and to evolve a unified protest strategy by the opposition parties.

It was further decided by both these leaders that opposition must exploit and exhaust all available constitutional forums before launching a street protest against the ruling party.

Sources in the PPP informed that it was decided by the party leadership to grill the ruling PML-N on all available forums on Panama leaks issue and that was the reason Syed Khursheed Shah, who is also head of Public Accounts Committee had summoned the FBR and NAB officials today(Thursday) to brief the committee on the measures they had taken to probe those who owned offshore companies as per Panama Papers revelations.
