On changing names/aliases

I am often surprised by inventiveness of the intelligent people in our political fraternity. Their latest masterpiece is this new fudge of a name 'Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwah that they have come up with for the province we used to call Sarhad or NWFP. In doing what they have done with it, they have preserved with the old silliness we are obsessed with to rename places or persons. A previous masterpiece of the genre was, of course, what they did to the name of young Bilawal Zardari, making it Bilawal Bhutto Zardari one fine morning, just to encash on the Bhutto heritage. Another historic stupidity of the same kind was changing the name of Lyallpur to Faisalabad. Likewise, Campbellpur was changed to Attock for no rhyme or reason. Only people without the slightest knowledge of history could do such a thing. We also changed the name of Montgomery to Sahiwal, I do not know why? If Montgomery is Sahiwal now, then Montgomery Road in Lahore should also be called Sahiwal Road. Isnt it? This Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwah is like taking the joke too far. A few visionless people should not be allowed to distort history and the age-old facts. Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwah is not a name, its a joke, a practical joke on people of the province. -ARBAB ALAMGIR, Hoti, April 8.
