PTI on ‘tricky track’ to delay no-trust vote

ISLAMABAD   -   The parliamentary party of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday decided to hold a debate on the alleged foreign conspiracy surrounding toppling the incumbent government in today’s crucial sitting of the National Assembly with one parliamentary secretary of the ruling party claiming that there will be no voting on the no-trust motion at least for Saturday.

The development came a day earlier when the National Assembly will meet today for a voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the light of the short order of five-member bench of the Supreme Court. “There will be no voting on the no-trust motion at least for today (Saturday),” Lal Chand Malhi, PTI MNA and parliamentary secretary for human rights, told The Nation after attending the meeting of the parliamentary party. PM Khan faces his removal from the office through the no-trust motion as he lost majority in the National Assembly last month after MQM-P, a key ally of the coalition government in the center, joined opposition ranks.

Leader of the House in the Senate Dr Shahzad Waseem also confirmed to The Nation that the parliamentary party, which met under the chair of PM Khan, has decided that PTI lawmakers would deliver speeches in the special NA sitting to record the stance and narrative of the party on toppling the government. However, he said that the meeting did not discuss the option of giving en masse resignations from the Assembly at the moment.

The official sources in PTI informed that it has been decided that PTI lawmakers would deliver lengthy speeches in the sitting to delay voting on the no-trust vote — a decision that is being seen as a contempt of court within the opposition camp.

The parliamentary party that was attended by around 100 lawmakers of the PTI out of its total 135 MNAs, minus 20 dissident lawmakers, also passed a unanimous resolution expressing solidarity with the premier in this time of crisis. The lawmakers vowed to stand by him through thick and thin. Some lawmakers also delivered emotional speeches in the moot with the suggestion that PTI should play an active role after sitting on opposition benches.

However, PM Khan on his turn stunned the participants by saying that they should not worry as “his government was going nowhere” and he will fight to the last.

“We will defeat every conspiracy to topple the government,” he was quoted as saying this in the meeting. He added that Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif would remain unsuccessful to wear “achkan” (a knee-length coat) — a reference that he will not be able to take oath as next prime minister. He also said that they would go to any extent to defeat the conspiracy against the government.

“The match has just started, the players are ready, and we will fight to the last,” the PM was quoted as saying this in the meeting. He reiterated his allegation that the country’s elite was available for sale just for a few pennies.

Addressing the parliamentary party meeting, the PM also criticized the short order of the apex court that set aside the ruling of the NA deputy speaker dismissing no-trust resolution against him and restored the National Assembly. He said that the order neither mentioned the controversial diplomatic cable containing threat to his government nor about the fate of those lawmakers who have defected to the opposition. “The order has surprised us.”

The PM also urged the formation of a commission on the war of terror to get an estimation about the country’s gains and losses.
