The government issued a notification stating that the ISI and other intelligence agencies would come under control of the Ministry of Interior. Hardly a day after this statement was issued, the government had to take it back. Chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari declared the issuing of notification 'a great decision'. This means the notification was issued with the understanding of the top management of PPP. According to sources, the government attempted to organize something like the Homeland Security Department in America but chickened out at the last moment. This is yet another in a series of blunders done by the PPP. They cannot control the prevailing economic depression in the country and now want to control the ISI for their political ends. As they say, think before you speak and think before you act. There is already too much on the plate of the government. It is embarrassing to see every statement issued being withdrawn and every act being recanted. Good governance requires moving beyond good statements. -DAWOOD SHAKIL, Rawalpindi, July 27.
