LAHORE - Following the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) the journalists took out a protest rally against the highhandedness of lawyers towards media and indifferent attitude of their regulatory councils and associations. Rally was aimed at recording journalists protest against lawyers torture on media persons and demanded of Punjab government to take prompt action against the responsible. The rally was taken out from the office of Punjab Union of Journalist (PUJ) went to Aiwan-e-Adl with massive participation of journalists including those who had come from out stations. Female members Punjab Assembly including Sajida Mir of PPP also joined mediamen in their protest rally. The protesting journalists were led by PFUJ President Pervez Shaukat who chanted slogans against vandalism of lawyers and demanded strict action against them. Journalists from print and electronic media staged sit-in at PMG Chowk. They were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans We want freedom, we disapprove lawyerism, we condemn torture. Heavy police contingent were deployed outside Aiwan-e-Adl and at The Mall to avert any untoward incident, however, the rally remained peaceful. Speaking on the occasion, President PFUJ Shaukat Pervez said that the lawyers forgot the time when media was standing by them throughout their movement for restoration of judiciary. He said success of their movement without media was impossible. He said the journalists would continue protest till strict action against the accused-lawyers was not taken. He further said that the journalists would not tolerate such actions and would struggle against rogue elements among lawyers. He asked the office-bearers of bar associations to take strict action against black sheep in their ranks. President PUJ Ahsan Zia and Secretary Rana Azeem also spoke on the occasion and condemned lawyers torture on mediamen. They announced to continue complete boycott of lawyers activities till the responsible(s) were not brought to the book.
