LAHORE  -  PML-N President and former Punjab chief minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif could not fly to Islamabad from Lahore due to bad weather to join the protest of the grand opposition against the alleged maneuvering in General Elections 2018, on Wednesday.

The spokesperson of the party Marriyum Aurangzeb told media here yesterday that Shehbaz Sharif could not reach Islamabad because of poor weather. She indicated that the party president was ready to move to the federal capital but the weather did allow him to join the protest.

Shehbaz who was too vocal against election manipulation and was the first to reject the election results on July 25, was due to lead the protest rally of the Alliance for Free and Fair Elections (grand opposition alliance) in Islamabad yesterday but could not make for the protest venue.

Absence of Shehbaz Sharif from the joint protest triggered speculations among the political observers as they saw it a deliberately made move taking cover of the poor weather conditions.

Last day no scheduled flight of any airline from Lahore was cancelled when no other politician of the main ring, complained of weather that had stopped him travelling to Islamabad.

It was not only Shehbaz Sharif but also the PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto and Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari who did not turn up at the Islamabad protest venue although the PPP was equally affected by the election results and had rejected the same as engineered and manipulated.

The first show of resentment against the election results by the joint opposition before the office of the Election Commission was quite peaceful and symbolic in nature for registration of protest and to seek annulment of the elections.

Although the top leadership of the two mainstream political parties was not present yet the Opposition’s protest demonstration was joined by other high ranking leaders during the show.
