ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Wednesday nominated Mehmood Khan, MPA-elect from Swat and former provincial minister, as its candidate for the slot of the KP chief minister.
The nomination for the next KP CM was announced by PTI in an unusual manner, showing a perfunctory approach of the party. Neither PTI Chairman and Prime Minister-Designate Imran Khan nor the party spokesman, Fawad Chaudhry, came out to make the announcement. The party only made this important announcement through its official twitter account. A short message was also sent to the reporters covering PTI through a WhatsApp message. “PTI Chairman and PM-Designate Imran Khan has nominated Mehmood Khan as the new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister,” the party’s official twitter account said.
Mahmood Khan has not so remarkable record in politics as he showed an average performance while running different portfolios in the last PTI-led provincial government of KP. He has also faced a corruption scandal in the past. The party sources confirmed former chief minister Pervez Khattak recommended his name after he failed to convince Khan that he should be nominated as the next CM of the province.
Mehmood Khan is considered a weak personality in the party. Moreover, he has no long experience of administration. The official sources in PTI disclosed senior party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen and Shahzad Arbab (former KP chief secretary and now a PTI leader) had convinced Khan to nominate Mehmood as a candidate for the CM post. However, this will remain a question how the next KP CM will move forward the manifesto of PTI and implement Imran Khan’s development agenda quickly.
PTI has got two-thirds majority in the KP Assembly as a result of the July 25 elections. However, the nomination of the next chief minister remained a hard nut to crack for the PTI chief for the last 13 days because of the internal rifts and grouping within the party over this nomination.
Former KP chief minister Pervez Khattak at one time had emerged as a strong contender for the slot of the next CM and had been lobbying to get the post. However, Imran Khan wanted to introduce a new face for the slot and had advised Khattak to vacate his provincial assembly seat while retaining his National Assembly seat for his induction in the federal cabinet. After this, the senior party leadership picked the name of Atif Khan, former provincial minister and a personal friend of Khan, for this slot. But Pervez Khattak had shown his reservations over the selection of Atif Khan and had said that the party should pick anyone except Atif.
Two other PTI leaders, Asad Qaiser, former KP Assembly speaker, and ex-provincial minister Shah Farman, had also emerged as contenders for the CM slot. The party chairman rejected the name of Qaiser while Shah Farman lost the provincial assembly seat in the vote recount and became out of the race of the chief executive of the province.
